Unaware of what has taken place, Andre calls several times, but Kayla refuses to answer.  In desperation, he calls Karah and leaves a message.  Karah convinces her to return his call, and they work out what Kayla will say.  The plan was to tell him the whole truth, from beginning to end.  However, when she heard his voice she lost her confidence.  Instead she told him that her sudden and prolonged absence was due to this killer flu that was going around.  They small talked for awhile and Andre reluctantly ended the call to go to class.  Over the next couple of days they played phone tag, and once they did finally connect the conversation was dry.  Andre was busy with his internship and Kayla was busy healing her emotional and physical wounds.  Every time Andre asked her what was wrong, she told him something different.  And at that point, as all lies do, the cover story had begun to have a life of its own.

By the end of that year her distance had taken it’s toll.  Andre grew to believe that Kayla had found someone else.  And although she assured him that her heart belong still belonged to him and was quick to remind him that he left her and that is was not the other way around, Andre wasn’t buying it.  It was the cause of many fights, and each time she tried to tell him the truth, she would lose her nerve again.  She knew it wasn’t right, but nothing was anymore.  At night, she would alternate between staring at the wall and crying herself to sleep.  It had been so long since she’d seen Andre.  He didn’t even come home for the holidays that year.  Things were falling apart and so was Kayla.  It was well into the following semester before Kayla returned to the land of the living, and regained her normal routine.  However, unfortunately by the time she did, it was too late.

Back in real time, the phone rings.  It breaks her flashback, and she’s is now in the present, taking her bath.  Kayla shakes the water from her hands and answers, it’s her mom.  “Kayla, why haven’t you been to the house?  And, have you met this new boyfriend that Karah is spending all of her time with?  Call me back.”  She will, but not tonight.  Her body has begun to shrivel and she decides that it’s time to bring this ritual to an end.  She dries off and makes the necessary steps to her bed, throwing herself upon it, as if to fall through it like Alice.  But when she hits her queen-sized bed that was made for a queen, to be occupied by a queen she can’t help but to notice that she isn’t in Wonderland.

As she lay there, she questions if a queen is still a queen, even if she has no king.  Channel surfing lands her on a classic, “Love Jones, ” one of Kayla’s favorites.   But when the movie goes off, so does her ease.  It’s night again, and she can hear the walls breathing.  Nevertheless, before she closes her eyes, she kneels beside her bed, and clasps her hands.  Now, a women’s prayer is between her and God, but I will tell you this:  her prayer seldom changes and always includes one special request.

Quick Recap:  Kayla has been invited to a party that will be attended by her former love.

    ..Continued –

It’s Saturday morning.  Kayla is home in her office.  She won’t answer her phone because avoiding Dawn, means avoiding the party and by avoiding the party she can avoid Andre.  The last time they talked it ended with Kayla eventually hanging up after he answered the other line and took too long come back.  Because of her pride, when he returned the call, she was conveniently unable to come to phone, at least that’s what her voicemail told him.  And the last time they were face to face, it ended with a night of unbelievable sex and an “I’ll call you when I get there.”  He “got there” a week later.  Tired of playing the game, Kayla swore that the last time would be just that.  But presence has power.  Sure she could be strong when he was nine hours away.  But now he’s minutes away.  To see him is to want him.  So she simply won’t see him.

The exotic smell of orchids fill her office as she screens another call and sees that it is safe to answer.  It’s Kareem.

“Hey baby, what’s up for tonight, can I see you?”

“Maybe, I’m a little tired, I don’t know if I’m up to it.”

“Listen, I’ll make dinner and we can rent a couple of movies.  You can relax at my place.  I’ll rub your feet.”

“I don’t know Kareem I’m just tired, this week was exhausting.  Can I call you later?”

“Okay, but be sure to call me back, you make a brother feel like he be stalking you or something.”

    “Hey, thanks for the flowers.”

“No problem, those are your favorite, right?”

“Right, I’ll call you back, I promise.”

Kayla met Kareem about a month ago at Espressos, a trendy little restaurant just outside of the city.  She was there with Karah he was there with his frat brothers.  After exchanging a few intense eye contact moments, Kareem worked up the courage to approach their table and strike up a conversation.  Kareem is sweet and nice looking.  He recently moved back to Detroit after spending a year in North Carolina on assignment for GM.  He has a four-year-old son and a baby momma from hell.  Kayla has a rule about men with children:  Don’t date them.  However, Kareem makes her laugh and his son is adorable.  They have gone out three times in the last month and each time she starts to like him a little more.

SERIES SUMMARY:  Kayla is on a quest to move beyond the hurt of her past as she realizes the impact that hurt has on her present and potential future. ..Continued –

Leaning back in her chair, slowly sipping a cup of chai-tea, and staring out of her office window, she thinks.  “If I go over to Kareem’s tonight, he’ll keep my mind off of the party, well he’ll keep it off of Andre.”  She sips again, “But that would be using Kareem and although I typically don’t have a problem with using men because they don’t have a problem with using me, Kareem doesn’t deserve that.  Besides, I’ll never get Andre out of my system, until I face and confront this situation.”  Convinced that someone else could offer her a different perspective, Kayla calls Karah.

“What should I do Lil Sis?”

“I’m tired of you putting your life on hold for Andre.  You need to go, face your demons and release them girl.  Kareem is looking very promising.  Don’t let Andre steel your chance at happiness, especially since it doesn’t seem that he is lacking any.”

Although Karah is the youngest, she is also the strongest.  Kayla always turns to her for advice and Karah always tells her what she needs, but often doesn’t want to hear.   It’s settled; she’s going to the party.  The rest of the afternoon, is consumed with what she will wear and how she will fix her hair.  She thought about how good Andre looked the last time she saw him and how long it has been since she felt him.  After taking a long bath and eating a quick snack, Kayla opens her walk-in and begins to put together the outfit that would not only make Andre remember what he left but also regret having done so.  She takes her time in getting dressed.  Every detail is attended to.  She does her hair, curly with a lot of bounce, flirty with a part that hangs in her eye.  The guys love that.  Next she perfects a makeup combination that is subtle yet sexy.  And finally she dresses, black jeggings with a low cut top and of course a pair of her signature stilettos.  She gives herself one last look-over, grabs her keys and takes off.

Dawn’s street is packed.  She can barely find a parking spot.  Circling the block five times won her a spot two streets over.  But Kayla is used to this because the parking is always bad at Dawn’s little get-togethers (which by the way are never little) and Kayla is always fashionably late.  Walking up the porch, she hears a hint of rhythm and blues and the muffled buzz of people talking.  Taking a moment to collect herself, she sucks in a deep gust of air and holds it until the door opens.  It’s Brandon, Dawn’s husband.

    ..Continued –

“Hey, Kayla, where in the world have you been hiding?  You look good tonight.”

“Brandon, don’t I always look good?”

“Yeah, but tonight you’re making a statement, come on in, you know Dre is here.”

Oh, Kayla knew that Andre was there and until she saw him it would be hard for her to breathe.  Mingling through the thick crowd she hears Dawn’s loud voice, “Kayla, when did you get here?”  Knowing that her cover was blown, she turns and smiles at the room of people who are all now fixated on her.  And, just as Dawn leans in for a hug, he walks out of the kitchen.

“Damn, he looks good,” she thought to herself.  “He looks like he tastes like chocolate,” she says out loud.  “What did you just say,” Dawn asked?  “Oh nothing,” Kayla replied as she watched him approach her.  “My turn,” and before she knows it, he’s holding her.

“How have you been?  You look good girl.  I miss you, what have you been in to?”

“Same old, same old, you know Andre, taking care of business and trying to live my life like it’s golden.”

“Well you look golden, give me another hug.”

She does, and when he holds for longer than a church hug should last, she pulls away.  “It is so good to see you Andre, let make my rounds, I’ll catch up later.”  And as she walks away she can feel him staring.  Operation “get rid of Andre” is in full effect.

Strolling over to the wet bar, Kayla is intersected by a noisy Dawn who wants to know all the details and why they parted so soon.

“Kayla, are you crazy, what did you say to him?”

“I told him that I would catch up with him later”.

“Why did you tell him that?”

“Dawn, somethings I have to work out on my own.  Let me do that please.”

“I hope you know what you are doing.”

Kayla mumbles, “I should have done it a long time ago.”

In that moment Kayla is reminded of the last Dawn house party that Andre flew in town for.  She clung to him the whole night.  Cut her eyes at every women who dared to even glance his way.  But most of all, she remembers requiring no explanation as to why she didn’t hear from him for months after.  Just to be with him was enough then.  She didn’t fool herself though.  She knew he wasn’t hers any more, and she knew it was only for a weekend.  They left that party, went back to her place, and didn’t come up for air until it was time for her to drive him to the airport.  An, “I’ll call you when I get there” and a kiss on the forehead was all she got.  She was messed up for days waiting for a call that never came.  That will not happen tonight.

    ..Continued –

“Repeating over and over again in her head, “I can’t go back there,” Kayla dips down the hallway to take a breather on the back porch.  She needed a minute to regroup.  But as she turns down the hallway she runs right into his chest.

“I remember the last time you kissed my chest.”

    “Really, I don’t.”

    “What?”

“I said, I don’t remember the last time I kissed your chest.”

    “Kayla, is something wrong?”

    “Why would you ask that?”

    “Are you mad at me?”

“Do I have a reason to be?”

“Look, I don’t know where this is coming from but I don’t want to fight Kayla, I was hoping to spend some time with you while I’m here.”

“You were hoping that you could sleep with me while you were here.”

“Dang, is that all we do.”

“Apparently, since I don’t hear from you until you’re ready to talk.”

“Kay, I’ve called you a couple of times lately.”

    “What?”

“Yeah, I called you a couple times last month.”

“I never got that call or any message.”

“I never left one.  You know that I don’t do messages, oh, and I got a new number.”

“That was you calling me from that 381 area code?  How in the hell was I supposed to know that that was you?”

“You knew that was me.  Who else would it be?”

“Are you serious Andre?  Do you really believe that or are you just saying it?”

Kayla lets out a frustrated laugh as she shakes her head and starts to walk away.

“Wait a minute, Kay, don’t walk away, come in here, can we talk for a minute?”

They enter a spare bedroom at the end of the hall, close the door and sit on the edge of the bed.

“I didn’t know that you were feeling like this.  You know that I love you Kayla, I always will.”

“You loved me once Dre, but that was last lifetime.  I can’t live there.  I know that you care about me, but it’s not the same.  I was still very much in love with you.  You moved away and moved on.  I stayed here and held on, to the nostalgia of what used to be and could have been.”

At this point it is painfully obvious that a conversation years in the making is about to happen.  And with this realization, Kayla lowers her head and wonders in silence, what happens when a weakened heart exhales.

“Kayla, it’s not like that, I love you.  You are probably the only women that I ever really loved.  How can you not know that?  How can you think that what we do is just physical or for play, really Kay…how can you feel that way about me and you?  You pulled away from me Kayla.  It’s not like you were blowing my phone up.  How many times did you come to see me, huh?  Every time we talked and every time we were together it meant something to me Kay.  When I first got there, I was lost, missing you, missing home, my family – everything.  To be honest, I was scared.  I didn’t know nobody or nothing about living in New York.  Okay maybe I could have called more often, and I was wrong for taking so long to get at you after my last visit, but you were sending me mixed messages for real.  Do you remember that?  One minute we were in love and next I couldn’t even get you on the phone.”
