Little Things

Their trash can is filled with morning blunders.
Yet she continues with a pleasant sense of urgency.
She’s no Betty Crocker, but today she strives to be.

She’s Not a Fan

“Steve, how many times have I asked you to stop spending money on these silly souvenirs?”

“They’re not souveniers Nancy, they are collectable action figures!  This beauty here is one of a kind.  One day you’ll be glad I bought them.  In a decade or two they will be worth a fortune.”

“Great Steve, then we’ll be able to purchase a new furnace and send Justin to college.”

“By the time they figure it out, we’ll be long gone,” he told his wife, kissing her gently on the cheek.

“How much do you think we’ll be able to get for it?”  she replied, with an insatiable greed in her eyes.

“Enough to slow down for the next couple of months and enjoy all of our, I mean their hard work.”

Surface

I remember the summer nights of my youth when the real darkness didn’t arrive until well past the first flicker of the streetlights.  We would ride our bikes all the way to the edge of the city and use the trail to get us to the dock.  Back then there were no danger signs, and though the water was deep, somehow we always made it back to the surface.
